Avoiding Heatstroke: Signs and Safety

Here in Florida the summer months offer us longer days, seasonal activities and visiting family members looking to enjoy all that our state has to offer. While our tropical climate is known for warmer weather year round, the rising heat this time of year means taking additional safety measures. As we enter the months that bring the highest of temperatures, it is important to take the steps necessary to avoid any harm from the heat. Overheating can occur at any time, though excessive temperatures outdoors increase the chances of developing a dangerous condition known as heatstroke. Remaining mindful of the temperature, taking proper precautions, and knowing the signs are vital for avoiding dangerous reactions to the heat.

Heatstroke occurs when the body’s ability to regulate its own body temperature is impaired by prolonged exposure to the heat or overexertion in the heat. While anyone can be affected, children and seniors are most at risk. Certain illnesses, medications and health conditions can play a role in one’s likelihood as well. When it comes to safety, we at Aqua Home Care refer trusted caregivers from our registry who ensure their client’s wellbeing at all times. Having a care professional nearby can be beneficial to those in need of daily support and can reduce safety concerns. Heatstroke is a serious condition, and being aware of its symptoms and taking preventative steps is imperative.

Symptoms include:

  • A rise in body temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
  • Confusion, slurred speech, irritability, seizures, or coma
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Increased heart rate
  • Rapid breathing
  • Skin redness
  • Headache

Be mindful to:

  • Avoid overexposure to the heat
  • Wear weather appropriate clothing
  • Stay hydrated
  • Remain in the shade as much as possible
  • Ensure the air conditioner is running properly in your home
  • Be aware of medications that can increase your risk
  • Avoid overexertion in the heat
  • Steer clear of sitting in an enclosed area, such as a vehicle, without the air conditioner on

Our Aqua Home Care team continues to help ensure that those in need of in-home care services are matched with compassionate caregivers. Trusted caregivers from our registry effectively meet their client’s needs and monitor their wellbeing not only during the warmest of months, but all year long. If at any time you or a loved one is experiencing signs of a heatstroke, seek medical attention right away. Visiting friends and family should also be informed. Making heat safety a priority can help prevent serious complications. Here at Aqua Home Care, we would like to wish everyone in our community a safe summer.
